For more information on the workshops, see below. No previous knowledge is expected for these workshops but booking preference for the Beginners 2 workshop will be given to those who have attended Beginners 1.
BASIC BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS 1 (Half day)
Make sewn single-section pamphlet bindings and learn to knife-trim the edges by hand, achieving a professional finish. This method can be used to make effective notebooks, sketchbooks and albums.
BASIC BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS 2 (Half day)
In this development of BASIC BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS 1, you will use a similar structure but make a hard-back binding with proper end papers, using the case binding method. This is a lovely way of binding small amounts of printed material, such as the work of a family poet or any other writings! The workshop will cover how to print optimally from computer files for binding purposes.
FULL DAY BEGINNERS' WORKSHOP
This workshop combines Basic Books for Beginners 1 and 2, as described above.
BOX WITH MAGNETIC CLOSURE
Make a covered box from raw materials with a folding lid and a hidden magnetic closure.
GIFT AND STORAGE BOXES (Half day)
Make and cover score-and-fold boxes using boxboard, and learn the tricks that give a professional finish.
FLAT-OPENING SKETCHBOOK (Half day)
This binding has a clever soft-back construction which creates a slightly freer spine area, and thus allows the pages to open completely flat. It is a book binding that you can repeat at home without specialist tools.
A book with pockets and windows and fold-out pages which will hold personal and travel memorabilia, postcards, photographs and other paper collectibles. Suitable for your holidays, to use as a journal, sketch book or scrap book. The album will be cased into a sturdy hardback binding. (It is a glued structure, with no sewing.)
INTRODUCTION TO JAPANESE BOOKBINDING
You will learn to bind books using Japanese techniques, including the inner bindings with twisted paper thread, and outer bindings with silk. Japanese decorative papers will be provided for book covers. Includes a demonstration of how to line delicate papers for bookbinding purposes.
BIND A 'PROPER BOOK'
In this workshop you will complete a substantial multi-section hardback book starting from scratch. Beginning by folding and sewing the pages in sections, you will then create a hard-backed case binding, using bookcloth for the spine, and covering the sides with decorated papers. You will use traditional bookbinding tools.
An album has a special construction with spacers between the pages, to make it suitable for items to be stuck into the book, such as recipes, cuttings, letters, photographs etc. This is larger than the Memory Album (above) and can be up to A4 size.
